During Carers Week (which occurs in October each year), I was reminded of the “contrast” between the Australian approach to people with physical health problems compared to our approach to those with emotional or mental health issues. If a friend is ill with a medical condition, caring people feel comfortable about sending cards or flowers, providing meals, making phone calls or providing other support for the stressed family. Clarification from Federal MP Rowan Ramsey on comments relating to a malicious “Opal Scam” story.
The tall story in the Adelaide Advertiser was not evidenced with complainants from the tourist sector as stated in the headline. Nor were any “suggested” opal retail outlets identified. No evidence of fake opal sales was provided in the mysterious story. Rowan Ramsey says…..
I refer to Tory Shepherd’s article 22/05/09 Adelaide Advertiser regarding synthetic opal sales in Coober Pedy. The sensationalist headline was over the top and unfortunately counter-productive.
Are recession preditors turning on their communities?
Upon reading the typical Advertiser (Adelaide Now) style headline, “Tourists duped in fake opal scam“, alarm bells began to ring. Reading further and subsequently hearing it rehearsed on regional radio, the picture became clearer. “Boys cry wolf on competitors”.
Is this the new style recession marketing plan of the contemporary Coober Pedy Miner come retailer, (incl. journos and other preditors), or have some of the old boys forgotton that this town thrived in hard times, attracting real workers, curious visitors and community spirit? Continue reading
