Sunday 14 January 2024 18:34:29 The Coober Pedy Police and Coober Pedy CFS with two CFS appliances responded to a report that there was a “car on fire, being towed upside down” out towards Hopeful Hills at Coober Pedy.
Within seven minutes of the call with a total crew of seven volunteers found the vehicle on its roof and smouldering after being dragged about 8km from Big John Street near town, to a residential area on the outskirts of Coober Pedy.
Responding firefighters assisted in putting out the fire and assisting police in flipping the vehicle into an upright position.
A number of the members recalled that the CFS had already put out the same vehicle on fire two years ago while it was housed at Big John Street.
Brigade Captain Matthew Corner said, “This is the third callout for Coober Pedy Brigade for 2024 and our second callout in less than 24 hours. We thank our firefighters for always responding so promptly no matter what the callout is and no matter what the weather conditions are.”
Coober Pedy and the Far North have been experiencing a severe heatwave along with damaging winds and thunderstorms for the past week with temperatures hovering around the low 40s.
