Police in the state’s Far North are investigating the circumstances of a fire that has destroyed the Kaltjiti/Fregon community store, causing an estimated $2m in damages.

The alarm was raised before midnight when a fire was noticed at the rear of the store about 11pm. The fire  quickly engulfed the store.

The Mintabie Fire Brigade responded but arrived 2 hours later to find the entire building and contents destroyed.

SPATE OF EARTHQUAKES HIT SOUTH AUSTRALIA’S FAR NORTH

A spate of earthquakes all within a week of each other have occurred in South Australia’s Far North with three strikes on the APY Lands.

A significant 6.1 earthquake struck near Ernabella (Pukatja), Fregon and Indulkana on the APY Lands at 8.25pm South Australian Daylight Savings Time CDT Friday night 23 March 2012.

The Ernabella quake occurred at a shallow depth of 3 km and according to Geoscience Australia may have been felt by people up to 507 km away and could have caused damage up to 40 km away. 

Mintabie residents on the APY Lands some 160 km away did not feel anything.  Continue reading

GROWING INDIGENOUS WORKFORCE AT PROMINENT HILL IN FAR NORTH

On Thursday 28 October at Prominent Hill eight members of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands community graduated from the Award Winning* OZ Minerals Pre-Employment Training Program and were formally recognised in their new mining industry roles.

Eight TAFE graduates from the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands community after their presentation, with OZ Minerals CEO Terry Burgess and Prominent Hill General Manager Mick Wilkes

Industry qualifications, through this program, have now been gained by 51 local and Indigenous graduates and 40 of these graduates are still working at Prominent Hill. Continue reading
