This year’s road safety message from police and Motor Accident Commission’s is: All we want for Christmas is you.
It is simple and a more light-hearted message than the sombre note we usually give our road safety messages. However, I hope it will have real cut through with the community.
After all, I know that nothing else counts this Christmas than to have my family safe and well. I am certain you all feel the same.
While we know people are fallible, serious injury and deaths can be greatly reduced when everyone accepts responsibility and they stop making wrong choices on the roads.
It’s interesting that at this time of year, we make such an effort saving to buy gifts, yet saving lives becomes a too much of an effort for many drivers in the rush of the season.
Safe driving is simple and cost free. It’s as simple as not drinking when you drive, never taking illicit drugs, not speeding and always driving in a safe, careful and considerate way.
But not doing this is potentially the most expensive, life changing choice you will ever make – and it could be your last.
I believe a pledge to safe driving is the best gift you can give your family and friends this Christmas, and every Christmas. Please take the pledge with me.
From everyone at South Australia Police, I wish you and yours a safe, peaceful Christmas and New Year.
