The local Aboriginal kids in the South Australian Aboriginal Sports Training Academy (SAASTA) held a Power Cup launch on Wednesday the 10th of March at the Mud Hut Motel.

Parents and community members were invited to come along to meet the team and mentors who will be going to the Aboriginal Power Cup.

The coach of local team The Coober Pedy Saints, Carmello Crisa was the guest speaker and had the students, parents and community members hanging on to every word of his inspiring speech. After Carmello finished his speech, the Principal of Coober Pedy Area School, Mr Bruce Schmidt also had a few words to say congratulating the students and wishing them luck for when they go to the Power Cup on June the 9th.

After the speeches, the Captains of the boys and girls teams were announced and the students were given their awards for enrolment in the Aboriginal Power Cup. Throughout the launch people got a chance to talk to the students and wish them luck.

During the launch the students laid out their guernsey designs on a table for every one to see and comment on. Students and parents all enjoyed the night thoroughly, “I thought the launch was a fun and informative one and a half hours”, said one parent. Ms Gum, one of the SAASTA teachers said that, “the students did a good job setting up and organising the launch and that the feedback on the guernsey designs was constructive and helpful”.

Overall the launch was a great way for the parents of the students and the community members to officially recognise the SAASTA involvement in the Aboriginal Power Cup.
