On 28 June 2024 at 9:41 pm, Coober Pedy’s emergency services were called to a mining field, north of the town, along the Stuart Highway (potentially the 17 Mile Field).

It had been reported that an individual needed rescue assistance after falling over 6 metres down a mineshaft.

The individual, a local male was admitted to the Coober Pedy Hospital for medical treatment and assessment.

Coober Pedy is currently experiencing communication issues with TELSTRA. More detail when it is known.
